Koror (PALAU) – The Palau Women’s National Team will arrive in Guam for the FIBA Women’s Micronesian Cup carrying a quiet confidence and a deep sense of pride, led by one of the nation’s most promising young talents, Kierra Ketebengang.

At just eighteen, she has already become one of Palau’s most internationally experienced players, shaped by a series of development opportunities that have broadened her game, her leadership, and her vision for what basketball can be for her country.

For Kierra, pulling on the Palau jersey is more than a sporting moment. It is the culmination of years of work, sacrifice, and support from her family, coaches, and community.

“

Representing Palau means everything to me. I’m representing my home, my family, and everyone who helped me during my journey. It all feels like hard work paying off.

Palau’s roster blends youth and experience, with Kierra joined by Janiyah Ngiraboi, Sheana Sumang, Akeelah Ngirakoranges, Trinity Misech, Meangeldil Azuma Malsol, Dorene Olkeriil, Sierra Chiokai, and Jenna Ucheduch Kyota. Together, they form a group defined not by height or size, but by determination.

“Our fans should be excited about our hearts,” Kierra said. “Even though we aren’t the tallest team, we will play to our very best to make them proud.”

The team’s goals for the tournament are grounded in effort and connection. On court, they aim to compete with intensity and resilience, playing hard regardless of the circumstances. Off the court, they hope to enjoy the experience of representing their nation and strengthen friendships across Micronesia. It is a balance of ambition and humility that reflects Palau’s identity in regional basketball.

Kierra’s rise within that identity has been shaped by a wide range of FIBA development pathways. She attended the inaugural FIBA Oceania 3×3 High-Performance Camp in 2024 as an athlete, learning the speed, intensity, and decision‑making required at elite levels. She returned in 2026 as a referee, gaining a deeper understanding of the rules and the tactical layers of the sport.

“3×3 has shown me a lot about the speed of thinking and moving,” she said. “Learning how to referee helped me understand the rules better as a player.”

Her development accelerated further through the 2025 She Hoops Confidence Program delivered by Basketball Australia, where she trained in a high‑performance environment supported by PacificAus Sports.

“It opened my eyes to what high‑level competition looks like,” she said. “It gave me confidence in my skills and how to be a great leader on and off the court.”

This year, FIBA announced a new partnership to strengthen basketball pathways in Palau, expanding opportunities for young athletes like Kierra.

She has already brought lessons from these programs back to her teammates, from updated rules and game concepts to the importance of mental preparation, body care, and playing with aggression and intent. Her approach to leadership is grounded in example, working hard, staying positive, and sharing what she has learned with others.

Despite her youth, Kierra understands the responsibility she carries as a role model. She hopes her journey shows young girls in Palau that their dreams are not limited by geography.

“I want them to know that everything is possible through Christ who strengthens you,” she said. “Even though we come from a very small island, it doesn’t limit your dreams. If you work hard, you will reach your goal.”

When she reflects on her younger self first picking up a basketball, she imagines a girl who would be overwhelmed with pride. “She’d be excited and proud of how far I have come, not only as an athlete but also who I am as a person,” she said.

“

She would be screaming on the top of her lungs because she has seen growth and the change that basketball has done in my life.

Kierra Ketebengang

As Palau prepares to take the court in Guam, they do so with a renewed sense of purpose. Their roster may be small in stature, but they are rich in heart, unity, and belief. With Kierra Ketebengang leading a new generation shaped by regional pathways, Palau enters the FIBA Women’s Micronesian Cup ready to compete, inspire, and represent their island with everything they have.

Palau will compete against Guam, and the Federated States of Micronesia at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Micronesian Cup, hosted by the Guam Basketball Confederation in Hagåtña from August 14 to 16. The top two teams will qualify for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti.
