Barcelona Full Council has given the go ahead for the urban planning procedure that will make the Museu Carmen Thyssen possible, with votes from the municipal government and the municipal groups of Junts per Barcelona, PP and Vox. The amendment to the general metropolitan plan will now have to get final approval from the Government of Catalonia.
The project includes heritage work that will enable the Palau Marcet to be renovated and the original architectural elements of its façade to be preserved, strengthening the heritage value of this historical building at Passeig de Gràcia, 13, listed as an asset of local cultural interest and home to the Cinema Comèdia up until 2024.
Among other things, the plan establishes that the complementary uses of the facility will represent around 16% of the entire surface area, below the 25% allowed by urban planning regulations, the aim being to ensure the mainly cultural and museum character of the project.
Flexible display spaces are planned for the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions, along with a large atrium entrance, an auditorium and a multi-purpose room, plus educational and administrative spaces and others for complementary activities linked to the museum, such as a specialist shop and a restaurant space with a terrace. The restaurant will not be directly accessible from the street and will only operate as a service for the museum and its visitors.
