The Albanese Government welcomes the visit to Australia this week of the President of the Republic of Palau, H.E. Surangel S. Whipps Jr., as our countries deepen cooperation on security, development and shared Pacific priorities.

Australia and Palau have a close and enduring partnership, grounded in our shared commitment to a peaceful, secure and prosperous Pacific.

Australia congratulates President Whipps as Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum, including his work to strengthen regional unity and advance Pacific priorities on the international stage.

During his visit, the President will officially open Palau’s Embassy in Australia, marking an important milestone in the relationship between our countries.

President Whipps and Foreign Minister Penny Wong will renew a development cooperation arrangement, reaffirming our partnership in support of Palau’s development priorities.

Australia and Palau are also deepening cooperation to combat transnational crime, including through enhanced policing cooperation and support for customs and border management.

Through our partnership, Australia is also supporting Palau’s efforts to preserve and manage its renowned coral reefs, strengthen government services, promote gender equality, and expand skills development and scholarship opportunities.
