Authorities are continuing their search for a Singaporean who went missing during a dive off Palau.

Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the incident took place on September 7th. The government is providing consular services to the diver’s family.

Palau authorities have been in contact with their counterparts in Singapore, and the latter government said it would keep monitoring the situation.

As of September 10th, the missing diver had not been publicly named, nor has the exact location where the incident took place been disclosed. Additionally, no official account of the circumstances behind the incident has been released.

Palau has long been a haven for divers and nature lovers. As a group, divers and nature lovers are aware of their surroundings and do what they can to preserve it. Until a few years ago, they made up the majority of the tourist market.

The Pacific island nation is a great diving destination that has both land-based resorts and a liveaboard industry. Both have their strong points, although it needs to be said that they do all dive the same sites. If you figure five days of diving in a week vacation and three dives a day on most days, you will not repeat a dive site, unless you really want to. Most of the sites are worth a second dive, but doing so may mean missing something just as exciting.

In 2018, Mission Blue conducted a Hope Spot expedition to Palau, where expedition members met with President Thomas Remengesau Jr. and talked about his efforts to establish a marine protected area in 80 percent of the waters around the South Pacific island nation.
