A catamaran was destroyed by fire this afternoon, around 2:30 PM, while anchored off the beach of Porto Pollo, off the coast of Palau . A 49-year-old man with Italian identification documents, the only person on board, saved himself by abandoning the vessel and swimming to shore.
The man, in a state of shock, was entrusted to the emergency services, who transported him to the Olbia hospital to check on his condition. Two units from the La Maddalena Port Authority, coordinated by Commander Vittorio Vanacore, the firefighters, divers from Porto Tores, and a helicopter responded to the scene.
The area is still cordoned off by Coast Guard patrol boats for safety reasons, and the Ministry of the Environment has been informed of any potential environmental pollution issues.
