Overview:

A developing tropical system northwest of Yap is bringing gusty winds and choppy seas to Palau, with wind gusts up to 30 mph expected through Tuesday. The National Weather Service says conditions should gradually improve as the system lifts away from the region — but residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and watch for road debris in the meantime.

KOROR, Palau (July 14, 2026)— Weather forecasters are tracking a developing tropical system northwest of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia, that is expected to bring gusty winds and rough seas to Palau through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The disturbance, designated Invest 97W, has become better organized and is now under a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, meaning a tropical depression could form within the next 24 hours.

Forecasters say the system is expected to drift northward, gradually pulling away from both Yap and Palau. As it does, winds and seas around Palau should slowly ease.

In the meantime, satellite data shows a strong burst of west to southwest winds moving across the region. Gusts of 30 mph or higher are possible around Palau through Tuesday, and seas are expected to build as the winds strengthen.

The National Weather Service is urging residents to secure loose items around their homes and to drive cautiously, watching for debris that may be blown onto roadways.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the week as the system continues to lift away from Palau, though residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service Office in Palau for the latest forecast changes.
