Ngerulmud, Palau — Palau’s Senate bid farewell to U.S. Ambassador Joel Ehrendreich on Wednesday, passing Senate Joint Resolution No. 12-10 to commend his service during the 14th day of its sixth regular session.

US Ambassador Joel Ehrendreich to the Republic of Palau

Nominated by President Joe Biden on March 20, 2023, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 13, Ehrendreich presented his credentials to President Surangel Whipps Jr. on September 29, 2023, at the executive building in Ngerulmud.

The resolution praised his role in bolstering U.S.-Palau relations, including co-leading the first bilateral economic consultations under the 2023 Compact of Free Association review — aligning with Palau’s national development plan. It highlighted a $2.37 million U.S. grant for a new hospital feasibility study, support for people-to-people exchanges like the Mechesil Belau program, and facilitation of visits by Palauan Major League Baseball player Bligh Madris and Olympic softball medalist Jessica Mendoza to inspire local youth.

A career Foreign Service officer, Ehrendreich was appointed ambassador in August 2023. His prior roles spanned the globe: director of the Office of Japanese Affairs; director of regional and security policy in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs; senior operations officer in the Bureau of Legislative Affairs; foreign policy advisor to the Marine Corps commandant; consul general in Okinawa, Japan; economic counselor in Manila; economic and political counselor in Singapore; political-military chief in New Delhi; political officer in Tokyo; visa officer in Sydney; and consular and political officer in Togo. He also served as a senior duty officer in the White House Situation Room.

Ehrendreich holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Drake University (1985) and served in the Peace Corps in Niger from 1985 to 1987.

His tenure ends May 4, 2026.
