OFC supports withdrawal of FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal

Members of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) have stated their support for the withdrawal of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal initiated by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Infantino’s proposal, which created a firestorm regarding good governance and transparency within football’s world governing body, sought to sell 21 percent of FIFA’s commercial rights for its flagship competitions like the World Cup to private investors, to raise about US$4.2 billion (NZ$7.b).

It was strongly opposed by the European (UEFA), South American (CONMEBOL), and North and Central American (CONCACAF) confederations.

The OFC stated its position on the proposal following the conclusion of an OFC Executive Committee meeting in Auckland on 12 August.

“OFC recognises the progress achieved over the last decade in advancing football development in Oceania under FIFA’s leadership and encourages FIFA to use the review as an opportunity to identify and implement any changes that may be necessary,” the OFC said in a statement.

“Good governance, transparency and respect for established institutional processes are fundamental to the effective administration and sustainable development of football. These principles are essential at every level of the game and should be upheld consistently by all football stakeholders.”

The OFC said development of football remained its priority.

“The Confederation will continue to support initiatives that strengthen the game and create meaningful, sustainable opportunities for football development across Oceania and globally.”

Meanwhile, OFC member New Zealand has indicated it has withdrawn their support for Infantino, who is seeking re-election for the top FIFA job in 2027.

New Zealand Football (NZF) said in a statement it was also seeking an independent review of the steps undertaken to develop the FFE scheme.

“After careful consideration, NZF has formed the view that decisions and actions within FIFA have contributed to a breakdown in trust and increased division within international football, and that an independent review is required to restore confidence and trust.”

“NZF believes this point in time represents an opportunity for all Fifa member associations to advocate for stronger governance, accountability and transparency which are fundamental in maintaining confidence in the administration of the global game.”
