Overview:
NEMO has raised a Small Craft Warning for Kayangel and Angaur as rough marine conditions continue, while advising the rest of Palau to remain under a Small Craft Advisory. Here’s what boaters and residents need to know.
KOROR, Palau (July 8, 2026) — The National Emergency Management Office (NEMO) has issued a Small Craft Warning, indicated by a red flag, for the states of Kayangel and Angaur, citing the latest forecast from the National Weather Service and firsthand reports from Wave Watchers stationed in both states.
A Small Craft Advisory, marked by a white flag, remains in effect for the rest of the Republic.
NEMO is urging all boaters traveling anywhere in Palau to continue observing marine safety rules and precautionary measures. Officials cautioned that boaters should not proceed to a destination if marine conditions there are too rough, regardless of departure point.
The advisory system remains subject to change as conditions develop. The public can contact NEMO directly for the most current Marine Advisory status at any time.
In addition to marine precautions, NEMO is reminding residents of general safety measures to take during windy and rainy weather. Loose outdoor items such as tents, tarps, boats and similar equipment should be secured or taken down until conditions improve.
Drivers are also asked to take extra caution on the road — watching their speed, keeping a safe following distance, using headlights when visibility is low, and staying alert for flooding, mudslides, landslides or debris.
NEMO encouraged the public to stay informed through the NEMO Facebook Page, Ngerel Belau and respective State Offices, as well as to continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service Office.
