The Girona City Council will promote a new playground with inclusive games in the Químics area, in the Pla de Palau – Sant Pau neighborhood, between Lluís Pericot avenue, Gabriel Roura i Güibas street and Creu de Palau climb.

The project is linked to the urbanization of some plots where housing is also planned, but the council places the park as a central piece of the action. The intervention will start with the adaptation of a green space of 10,337 square meters and, when that phase ends, the city council will tender the installation of the games for 130,546.28 euros including VAT.

The owners first urbanize an area of 10,337 square meters

The initial works are carried out by the owners of the Torre Rafela sector to comply with their urban planning obligations.

This first phase includes a network of accessible paths, stairs, a naturalized pond to improve drainage, new lighting and irrigation network. It also incorporates trees, urban furniture, fountains and bicycle racks.

In the same area, the council also plans new climate shelters and other outdoor living spaces linked to the city’s adaptation to heat, an approach that the municipal government also mentions in this project.

The park will distribute the games on three connected terraces

After the urbanization, the city council will put out to tender the installation of the playground. The action contemplates a budget of 130,546.28 euros including VAT to complete the equipment.

There will be inclusive swings, wooden houses, climbing structures, trampolines, sand games and slides integrated into the slopes. The design is organized into three connected terraces and adds a large main play structure.

Lluc Salellas i Vilar, mayor of Girona, defended during the presentation that the urbanization of these plots should incorporate not only flats, but also a large park with playgrounds. The mayor added that the city needs more green, more play, more climate resilience and more community spaces, and stressed that most of the games have been designed with inclusive criteria.

“Today we can clearly say that Girona improves because when the urbanization of these plots was planned, we were clear that in addition to flats, a large park with playgrounds was needed” – Lluc Salellas i Vilar, mayor of Girona

Lluís Martí Arderiu, councilor for Proximity Urbanism and Planning, framed the action within a plan initiated during the previous term to provide the city with a large children’s park. The councilor maintained that the proposal combines urban quality, accessibility, and sustainability to offer families a reference space.

The games will be placed on shock-absorbing pavements.

Most of the elements will be constructed with European larch wood from sustainably managed forests. The project will be completed with new plantings of trees, shrubs, and flower meadows.
