A steady increase in demand for skilled aviation professionals across Fiji has prompted a renewed focus on specialized training as the sector grows alongside tourism and regional connectivity.

In response, the Fiji National University launched the Pacific Centre for Aviation Studies at its Nadi campus last night.

Formerly the Department of Aviation Studies, the Centre has been upgraded to align with evolving industry requirements and strengthen Fiji’s position as a regional aviation training hub.

The Centre will introduce specialized sub-courses to strengthen technical capability and professional development, focusing on safety systems, operational management, and quality assurance.

In addition to existing aircraft maintenance licensing programmes, it plans to roll out a Diploma in Flight Simulation and Performance Engineering, Certificate Levels 3, 4, and 5 in Air Base Management, and a Diploma in Air Base and Business Management.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka says the establishment reflects progress, innovation, and opportunity created through the shared commitment of the government, industry stakeholders, and international institutions.

He says plans are in place to position the Centre as a leading aviation training institution in the Pacific.

“This will be achieved through the introduction of 30-year regional scholarships, the adoption of international aviation standards, the provision of courses of effective regional training auxiliaries, the strengthening of higher-level industry partnerships, and extension into the advanced technology that will shape the future of aviation across the Pacific.”

The upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to modernize and centralize aviation education within a national university framework, opening new pathways for aspiring professionals.
