First stage of drought declared for parts of Vanuatu

Vanuatu’s weather service has declared a meteorological drought for some northern parts of the country.

This applies to Torba province, and parts of Sanma, Penama and Malampa provinces.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Hydro-meteorological Services (VMHS) said a meteorological drought is the first stage of drought, and happens when rainfall has been significantly below the long-term average for an extended period.

The areas have recorded significantly below-average rainfall over the past three months.

It said it serves as an early warning that, if dry conditions continue, more serious impacts, such as agricultural drought, may develop.

VMHS emphasised that occasional rainfall events can still happen during El Niño.

“However, these rainfall events may not provide enough water to eliminate the accumulated rainfall deficit or bring an end to the meteorological drought. Several weeks or months of near-or above-average rainfall are often required before drought conditions improve,” it said.

“With El Niño expected to continue over the coming months, there remains an increased likelihood of below-normal rainfall across other parts of Vanuatu.

“Communities, government agencies, and stakeholders are encouraged to prepare early and make efficient use of available water resources.”

People are advised to conserve water and monitor household rainwater storage.

Farmers should consider water-saving practices and monitor crops and livestock closely.

PNG Prime Minister James Marape said the government was taking early action to ensure that communities, particularly those in drought-prone and water-scarce locations, are prepared.

Tonga’s National Disaster Risk Management Committee met last month to strengthen preparedness and planning.

Fiji’s minister for meteorological services said the government has set aside money in case of water shortages linked to El Niño conditions.
