KOROR, Palau (July 17, 2026) — A petition calling for women to be allowed to compete in the Belau Games 2026 spearfishing competition has gained more than 600 signatures, but organizers have rejected the request, saying the decision came after competition plans, athlete registration and safety requirements had already been finalized.
The Belau Games Organizing Committee on July 16 denied a request from Sonsorol State to include women in the Spearfishing/Underwater Fishing event, citing the Games’ existing rules and regulations, the competition schedule beginning the following day, and the completion of athlete registration.
The online petition argues that limiting spearfishing participation to men is outdated and restricts opportunities for skilled female athletes.
“Such restrictions in sports are outdated, limits the growth of the sport, and exclude highly skilled spearfishers based on gender rather than ability,” the petition stated.
The request was submitted by Sonsorol State, which asked the Organizing Committee to allow women to participate in the event. After meeting with state representatives, spearfishing tournament directors and officials, the Committee decided not to alter the current Games program.
In a letter to the Governor of Sonsorol, the Organizing Committee said the request was received too late in the Games preparation process.
“Based on the Games Rules and Regulations, competition schedule, and the athlete registration process, adding a new inclusion decision at this stage would affect the fairness, safety, and overall organization of the Games,” the Committee stated.
Organizers emphasized that they support expanding opportunities for women in the sport and acknowledged the importance of greater inclusion in future competitions.
