Battle for survival: Weekend showdowns to decide OFC Pro League semifinal race

Auckland FC and Bula FC will be fighting to keep their OFC Pro League semifinal hopes alive when they meet in game two of the Leaders’ group in Auckland on Saturday.

Both sides lost their opening matches on Wednesday; Bula FC going down 1-0 to South Island United and Auckland FC pipped 2-1 by South Melbourne FC.

A win for either side will see them in the top three, but a loss could jeopardise their hopes of securing a semifinal spot.

Following the first round of matches, South Melbourne FC are at the top of the points table with a better goal difference over South Island United.

The two joint leaders will meet in the second game on Saturday evening, with the winner expected to take over the at the top of the points table.

Challengers

In the Challengers group, Vanuatu United and Solomon Kings FC secured wins in their opening matches on Thursday.

Vanuatu beat PNG Hekari FC 3-1 while the Kings went past Tahiti United 2-1.

The wins placed Vanuatu United at the top of their points table, with a better goal difference, while Solomon Kings are currently second.

The two teams will square off against each other on Sunday at the Go Media Stadium.

Thursday’s losing teams Tahiti United and PNG Heakri FC will meet in the second game of the day.

The top three teams from the Leaders’ group will qualify for the semifinals, scheduled for 20 May at the Go Media Stadium.

The fourth team from the Leaders’ group will meet in a semifinal play-off against the top Challengers’ Group team on 17 May, the winner than advancing to the semifinals.

Kick-off: 2:30pm Saturday 9 May

South Melbourne FC vs South Island United

Kick-off: 6:30pm Saturday 9 May

Eden Park, Auckland

Solomon Kings FC vs Vanuatu United FC

Kick-off: 1:00pm Sunday 10 May

Tahiti United vs PNG Hekari FC

Kick-off: 5:00pm Sunday 10 May
