A Russian “Shahed” drone struck a cargo vessel flying the flag of Palau, which was en route from a Ukrainian port to Greece. This occurred as the vessel was exiting the Danube estuary.
On board were nine crew members and a pilot. After the first strike, the Russians attacked the vessel again – a powerful explosion caused a large-scale fire
The Maritime Guard of the State Border Guard Service evacuated eight people from the burning vessel. All were transported to a safe location, and medics are monitoring their condition. A search and rescue operation for two crew members who ended up in the water after the first explosion is ongoing, the border guards reported.
The attack on a civilian merchant vessel is further evidence that Russia continues to disregard the norms of international humanitarian law and the principles of civilian navigation safety.
