Pacific nations are calling for stronger legal safeguards and ethical recruitment practices as labour migration across the region continues to increase. Speaking at the inaugural Pacific Labour Ministers Meeting, Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Agni Deo Singh highlighted growing concerns surrounding worker protection amid shifting labour trends. [Photo: FILE] A pistol magazine loaded with 11 live 9mm rounds has been discovered near the Nasinu Police Station in the Makoi area, triggering a joint investigation by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Police. The RFMF says the magazine and ammunition were found at around 5am yesterday near a bus stop close to the station. The proposal was initially tabled by President David Adeang in January. In his second reading speech on 29 January, Adeang said “while the name Nauru has been recognised internationally since independence, this proposed change seeks to more faithfully honour our nation’s heritage, our language, and our identity”. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has dismissed claims of a rift between the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, saying both institutions remain united in the fight against crime and ongoing investigations.
