KOROR, Palau — President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. joined Pacific leaders at the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Troika Leaders Meeting on July 1 at the PIF Secretariat in Suva, Fiji, as Palau intensifies preparations to host the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting beginning Aug. 30 in Koror.
The meeting brought together Prime Minister Matthew Wale of the Solomon Islands and Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua of Tonga and was hosted by Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General Baron Divavesi Waqa.
Discussions focused on regional priorities and advancing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent as Pacific leaders work to strengthen cooperation on climate resilience, sustainable development and ocean stewardship.
Palau, which will assume the Forum chairmanship, views the upcoming leaders meeting as an opportunity to strengthen regional collaboration while showcasing the nation’s culture and commitment to ocean conservation.
“Hosting the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting is an honor and a responsibility we don’t take lightly,” said Oyaol Ngirairikl, Director of Communications, Office of the President.
Ngirairikl said the Forum comes at a pivotal time for the region as Pacific nations work together to advance the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
“For Palau, the greatest opportunity is the chance to serve our Pacific family well — to be good hosts and a bridge that helps carry forward the priorities our leaders have built together,” Ngirairikl said. “It is also a moment to share who we are: our culture, our hospitality and our generational commitment to caring for the ocean.”
Officials said they hope the event will deepen public understanding of the Forum’s work, particularly among young people, while strengthening Palau’s long-term capacity to engage on regional priorities such as climate resilience, ocean conservation and sustainable development.
Palau’s Forum theme, “Building Economies: Life. Action. Unity” (BELAU), reflects the country’s goal of promoting practical outcomes that improve the lives of Pacific people and reinforce regional solidarity.
The Troika mechanism brings together the current, outgoing and incoming Forum chairs to support leadership transitions and ensure implementation of priorities established by Forum leaders.
Palau has participated actively in Troika discussions throughout the year, including recent meetings in Suva. Key topics have included strengthening regional institutions, advancing climate resilience initiatives, developing financing mechanisms such as the Pacific Resilience Facility and coordinating Pacific positions ahead of international events, including COP31.
Officials said Palau hopes the discussions will lead to concrete outcomes at the Forum Leaders Meeting in Koror, including initiatives that support sustainable economic growth, ocean and marine resource protection and disaster resilience across Pacific communities.
They also emphasized the importance of regional decision-making that addresses the needs of both smaller island states and larger economies across the Blue Pacific region.
“Our goal as incoming Chair is simple: keep the Forum focused on what unites us, deliver real progress on the 2050 Strategy, and ensure the outcomes from Koror are ones our people, and the wider Blue Pacific family, can feel in their daily lives,” Ngirairikl said.
The Troika meeting highlighted Palau’s growing role in regional leadership as preparations continue for the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Koror.
