(KOROR, Palau) Palau is taking early steps toward strengthening its role in regional and global connectivity following a recent meeting between the Senate Committee on Cybersecurity, Telecommunications and Technology and a visiting delegation from the School of Internet (SOI) Pacific Initiative Planning and Coordinating Team.
The visit marks an initial effort to build partnerships that reflect Palau’s local knowledge and experiences while expanding opportunities for communities to engage more broadly across the Pacific and beyond. Leaders emphasised the importance of ensuring that technological advancement aligns with cultural values and community needs.
Following the meeting, the committee convened a legislative oversight hearing at 2 p.m. with the Bureau of Communication under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and Industries. The hearing focused on aligning the bureau’s work with fiscal responsibilities and its legislative mandate, as lawmakers prepare for the upcoming fiscal year budget review.
Senators welcomed the discussions, highlighting the potential for collaboration in technology, education and community development. Officials expressed optimism that continued dialogue will help create sustainable opportunities for Palau’s future while strengthening connections within the region and the wider world.
