Vanuatu

Team Vanuatu will have 14 athletes competing at the Games.

Vanuatu Assocaition of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC) president David Lolo told RNZ Pacific that six sports are being represented and the athletes will be out to improve on their performances.

“The focus is to progress on current PBs and push harder, move faster and be better,” Lolo said.

He picked judoka Priscillia Monthouel plus weightlifters Ajah Pritchard-Lolo and Thomas Wilbur as key performers.

Lolo said despite “zero government support despite many attempts to have them partner our campaign”, Team Vanuatu is now focused on being prepared the best way they can for the Games.

Costs for the Games is around VT11,000,000 (NZ$159,500) and that covers travel, accommodation, preparation, and logistics.

“We had a very wide window of opportunity to engage and secure a partnership but for whatever reason,” Lolo said.

“There has been no positive response from our government friends. We won’t dwell on it, we simply can’t. We have 14 athletes and their officials looking us dead in the eye for leadership and guidance.

“So, we have an obligation to reassure our team and to keep moving and pressing forward, that’s what sports teaches us. It’s a simple case of offence and defence and this CGA is currently playing offence because Glasgow is just around the corner. “

Team Vanuatu will have a staggered departure approach with some leaving earlier for pre camps in Scotland and Sweden while there are some athletes in camps now across Fiji and Samoa, but will all return to Vanuatu for the group departure to Glasgow on 20 July.

Chef de mission Mike Masauvakalo said the investment in the 14 athletes and eight officials is critical.

“This investment reflects our strong belief in our athletes and our commitment to developing sport in Vanuatu,” he said.

“The use of VASANOC reserve funds ensures that our athletes are fully supported as they represent our nation with pride on the international stage.”

Amongst these athletes are 11 open allocated qualification, one bipartite invitation and two qualifications on merit.

Special also for Team Vanuatu is the inclusion of local sports administrator Anna Bumseng, who has qualified through the Commonwealth Sport eqUIP Skills Academy as part of the Games’ wider admin team.

“Anna has been invited to join a commonwealth wide team of administrators to help run and organise games times events, she will be in Glasgow for the duration of the games and Team Vanuatu look forward to seeing one of our own representing us in that space,” Masauvakalo said.

“Team Vanuatu carries the hopes and pride of the nation, and preparations are well underway to ensure athletes perform at their best. The Vanuatu CGA calls on all citizens to support and encourage the team as they compete against some of the best athletes across the Commonwealth.”
