Authorities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) say an object seen breaking apart in the sky over Saipan has been identified as space debris.
The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office said Joint Task Force-Micronesia and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the object, which was spotted on Thursday evening, was re-entering space debris.
Residents across Saipan reported seeing a bright object streak across the sky before fragmenting in the atmosphere, with videos of the event widely shared on social media.
Officials said there was no indication of any threat to the public.
The FAA continues to track the debris while local emergency officials coordinate with federal agencies for any further updates.
The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management Office said more information would be released as it becomes available.
