The Suva Magistrates Court has heard that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption will rely on an alleged partial confession made by Suva lawyer Tanya Waqanika during her caution interview.

Waqanika faces one count of breaching the Political Parties Act.

FICAC alleges she breached political neutrality rules by making a Facebook post in April 2024 opposing the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) while serving as a public officer on the boards of Investment Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited.

She appeared before Resident Magistrate Yogesh Prasad this morning.

FICAC counsel Joseph Work told the court that the proposed plea and charge (PTC) is based in part on admissions made during the caution interview, which he said relate to elements of the offence.

Defence lawyer Barbara Malimali told the court that the admissions relate to Waqanika’s board membership, which is not being disputed, and confirmed they have received all disclosure documents from FICAC.

The court granted the defence time to finalise its PTC.

The matter has been adjourned to the 16th of next month, with bail extended.
