KOROR (Island Times/Pacnews) — Law enforcement authorities seized 333.33 grams of methamphetamine in two separate incidents involving packages sent through the post office and DHL, in Palau Minister of Justice Jennifer Olegeriil confirmed during a press conference last Wednesday marking the launch of National Police Week.

The confiscations were credited to coordinated police intelligence efforts, profiling operations and collaboration with Border and Customs K-9 units working to intercept illegal drugs entering Palau.

“The confiscation of the illegal drug from mail is the result of good police work on profiling and intel but also working in collaboration with Border and Customs K-9 units to catch illegal drugs at the borders,” Olegeriil said.

President Surangel Whipps J. praised law enforcement officers for the successful operations and emphasized the importance of teamwork in combating drug trafficking.

“It takes a team, together we can achieve this goal,” Whipps said.

The announcement came as Palau launched National Police Week, observed on May 10-17, through a presidential proclamation recognizing the role of law enforcement officers in protecting lives and property across the country.

Olegeriil said the week was intended to honor police officers and raise public awareness about the sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel and their families.

“This seeks to recognize police officers,” Olegeriil said.

Activities throughout the seven-day observance highlighted different aspects of policing and public service. One day was dedicated to honoring the families of police officers and recognizing the sacrifices they make in supporting loved ones serving in law enforcement.

Another day commemorated officers who lost their lives in the line of duty while carrying out their responsibilities.

Whipps also congratulated police officers for their recent investigative work that led to the conviction of Burton Wenty on drug possession charges, describing it as another example of law enforcement’s continuing efforts to address illegal drugs in Palau.
