Tropical Depression 01W, which formed northwest of Palau overnight, has no direct threat to the Marianas, according to the National Weather Service.
However, a high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through late Thursday tonight, NWS Weather Forecast Office Guam said.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water.
If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help, NWS said.
As of 1 a.m., 01W was located 9.5 degrees north and 130.4 degrees east, about 315 miles west-northwest of Koror and 1,010 miles west-southwest of Guam.
It’s moving northwest at 9 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 30 mph.
01W is forecast to intensify, possibly becoming a tropical storm Friday night but NWS said “there is no direct threat to the Marianas expected from 01W.”
