Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona hosts the London Philharmonic Orchestra on 26 October 2026, bringing Edward Gardner, Julia Fischer and a programme of Casals, Brahms and Sibelius to the concert hall. The building, also known as a major Modernista landmark, places a British orchestra inside one of Barcelona’s defining cultural spaces.

London Philharmonic comes to Palau on 26 October

The concert begins at 8pm on Monday 26 October 2026 in the Concert Hall. Fundació Orfeó Català-Palau de la Música organises the event as part of the Palau 100 cycle, according to the venue’s event details for 26 October.

Gardner conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with Julia Fischer as soloist in Brahms’s Violin Concerto in D major. The programme opens with the Prelude from Pau Casals’s oratorio El Pessebre and continues with Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major. The combination links Catalan musical heritage with two large-scale works from the European concert repertoire.

How the concert relates to the Modernista hall

The venue was built between 1905 and 1908 by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner as the headquarters of the Orfeó Català. It stands in Barcelona’s Sant Pere quarter and was funded through public subscription, according to the building’s history.

The Concert Hall is arranged around a central skylight and an organ on the stage. Natural light enters through stained glass, while sculptural muses surround the stage and decorative motifs extend through the interior. That setting gives the Casals Prelude a direct architectural connection to the institution for which the hall was created.

The building became a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 4 December 1997. The international listing covers the hall’s architecture and its place within Catalan Modernism; the UNESCO World Heritage record identifies it alongside Barcelona’s Hospital de Sant Pau as work by Domènech i Montaner.
