BarcelonaFirst contact by the President of the Generalitat with all political forces—except Vox—to put an end to the educational crisis. Salvador Illa held a meeting with the parliamentary groups with the goal of reaching a national education pact following the conflict with teachers, the decline in educational results, and the fiasco in the PISA tests. Some of the proposals that the PSC leader has already put on the table is the return of textbooks to classrooms, the imposition of mandatory readings in high school, and, among others, the prohibition of the use of artificial intelligence until the age of fourteen.
The only political force that declined the invitation from Illa to the meeting this Friday morning was Vox. At first, the People’s Party of Catalonia had also said it would not attend, although it later changed its mind and finally sent a representative to the Palau de la Generalitat. Aliança Catalana also attended, which is the first time it has been included in a meeting of this kind.
The rest of the political parties, especially Junts, attended the meeting with a certain skepticism. All parliamentary groups, except the PSC, demanded the resignation of the Minister of Education, Esther Niubó, in the extraordinary plenary session of Parliament due to the PISA test fiasco. The President of the Generalitat, however, opposed it again and maintained his unequivocal confidence in the head of education.
Once the meeting has finished, around 11 a.m., Niubó is expected to appear to explain how the meeting with the rest of the parliamentary groups went. Afterwards, the rest of the political parties will also show their position in statements to the press.
