Wale faces no-confidence challenge as he attends Forum in Palau

SOLOMON Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale has arrived in Palau for the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, with a motion of no confidence awaiting him at home.

The motion, filed by East Malaita MP and Minister for Home Affairs Manasseh Maelanga, was received by the Clerk of Parliament as Wale departed the Solomon Islands.

The challenge comes just three months after Wale formed the GREAT Coalition Government and follows allegations that he has made unilateral decisions without adequate consultation and failed to take key matters through Cabinet.

Speaking to Tavuli News shortly after arriving in Palau, Wale gave little detail on the motion.

“When I know, I’ll tell you more,” he said when asked about the challenge.

Minister for National Planning Peter Kenilorea Jr. said he was also unaware of the reasons behind the motion.

“No idea. No idea as to why. Looking forward to finding out more,” Kenilorea said.

He described the development as a surprise but said the government would deal with the matter while maintaining its focus on the Forum.

“It’s just one of these things that we have to deal with, that sort of thing,” he said.

“But it’s great to be here in Palau and see if we can hand over the chairmanship to Palau. Looking forward to taking the regional leadership role as well.”

The motion presents an early political test for Wale’s government and could expose divisions within the coalition if Maelanga secures significant parliamentary support.

Wale and Maelanga were previously rivals for the prime ministership, with Maelanga withdrawing his candidacy ahead of the parliamentary vote that elected Wale.

Wale’s political challenge comes as he attends the Forum as outgoing Forum Chair. He is expected to formally hand over the chairmanship to Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. during the Leaders’ Meeting.

Wale is due to return to Solomon Islands tomorrow, highlighting the seriousness of the political situation.

The timing places Wale in a delicate position, balancing his regional responsibilities in Palau with a potentially significant parliamentary challenge awaiting him in Honiara.
