Hagåtña (Guam) – The Federated States of Micronesia took an important step forward in their Pacific Games qualification campaign with a composed win over Palau, showing the resilience of a team carrying the hopes of a small but deeply proud nation spread across four island states.

FSM’s identity in this tournament has been built on effort, connection, and belief, and that was evident again as they steadied themselves early, leaned on their depth, and found momentum through the play of Noah Adams, and Aurelio Pluhs, both finishing with a double‑double, growing into the game as FSM settled into their rhythm and began to control the tempo.

For Adams, the performance was driven by something bigger than the box score.

“Yesterday was a little bit of a tough loss. We got into foul trouble and today I was really trying to focus on the end goal of the Pac Games in Tahiti,” he said. “That was what really drove the entire thing for me. Shout out to all my teammates, it took me a little while to get started, but especially Tyrone. He was able to get a lot of those points in the first half and really set us up for success.”

This FIBA Micronesian Cup marks Adams’ first time representing FSM, a moment he describes as deeply personal.

“

It means everything. I see my sisters compete for FSM, my little sister is competing here too, and to be able to wear this jersey really means everything to me.

Noah Adams

FSM’s defensive pressure and improved discipline allowed them to keep Palau at arm’s length throughout the second half. Palau battled behind the efforts of their returning core, but FSM’s ability to adjust, absorb pressure, and respond with composure proved decisive.

Adams said the regional rivalries and shared history across Micronesia fuel the intensity of the event.

“

I love it. I love the competition. The Micro Cup, everybody gets fired up and the competition element just drives me.

For FSM, every win carries weight. As a nation made up of more than 600 islands spread across the western Pacific, opportunities to compete on the international stage are rare and meaningful . Qualifying for the Pacific Games in Tahiti would be a landmark achievement, not just for the team, but for the communities watching from Chuuk, Pohnpei, Yap, and Kosrae.

“I don’t want to say everything again,” Adams said, “but it’s (qualifying for Pacific Games) is a goal that me and my cousin have worked on for so long. Micro Cup has always been a challenging competition trying to face Guam, and I’m just really glad we have the opportunity to continue this up to the Games.”

The Federated States of Micronesia and Palau will compete at the 2026 FIBA Micronesian Cup, hosted by the Guam Basketball Confederation in Hagåtña from August 14 to 16. The top team will qualify for the2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti.
